Friday, April 1st: My friend Wendy joined me for a 2 mile run at my new favorite trail. They stopped at our place on their way to Chi-town. It was great to see a familiar face and the 2 miles flew by because we had so much to chat about! We felt great and she really enjoyed stretching her legs after being in the car all day and I enjoyed finally being able to run after work! We headed home to some homemade delicious pizza.

Sunday, I was able to talk Steve into 2 miles..I was really trying for more but he is one person I can't talk into extra mileage..especially because he hasn't run in over a year or even longer. But, he did great and we had a nice pace. I snapped a picture for proof :)

Stretching afterwards is a must..with lots of water!

Last night, I met my Dad and Steve for a quick after work 2 miles. I really want to break the 2 miles and do more but hey I am proud to be getting mid week runs in. I'll take it. Here is a quick picture after we made it back to the house. The run felt great but my lower back is killing me this am. better get over the aches and pains.. I have some serious miles to put in!
Not posting since December is unacceptable! Although I have a great excuse, we aren't going to go there.. Let's just say. We are all settled in to our new home in Columbus, our jobs and a church family. Now it's time to get back into a running routine.

Enter GYRO Ohio. This will be the 4th state that I've started a group and all except Kentucky are still running smoothly without me :) One thing about myself that is very clear..I'm a social runner and do not like to run alone so I'm always scouting out friends who could be gently persuaded into starting to run or get back into running or like to run! In my small group at church I found all of these..Praise God..because it's almost tank top and short season and without running and drinking lots of coffee..woah let's not even go there..

Yesterday was the first official meeting. I had found a nice trail, very similar to The Huckleberry in Virginia. Paved, Wide, Close to my house and at least 6 miles. It's called Blacklick Creek Greenways Trail. There are multiple trails there which after some exploration, I'll post more about. But we jogged/walked a total of 3 miles. The running was probably just shy of a mile but it was cold and great to just be outside setting my routine again and with some new friends :) Here is a picture of the girls afterwards:

So, leave a comment about how you've got your run on lately... Encouragement is oxygen for the soul (a snipit from yesterday's church service but so applicable to the foundation of GYRO)

I actually did it. I got up early. Ran in the cold. No excuses. Now the thing is this was really day 2 but to be sure day 1 was really day 1 of change I had to have a day 2. Day 1 consisted of some P90X yoga and today I could only manage (due to time and temperature) 12 minutes of running but hey..let's be real honest. SOMETHING is always better than NOTHING (unless we are talking about fat). I was joined by Steve who actually admitted that after 10 minutes and a mile he wasn't that cold anymore. I was. I'd warmed up so my sweat was starting to freeze but I'm just so glad I did it. I was hoping for more like 3 miles but whew..that weather is brutal. I'm planning on some ab work tonight and hopefully a day 3 with more mileage.. we are taking it one day at a time. However, day 1 and day 2 were so refreshing and I already feel healthier.
It was a white one here in Ohio but nothing compared to our friends and family in Kentucky and Virginia. But, let me get right to the point..

I have been an absolute lazy lazy lazy lady. I've done NO running or exercising. Unless you count the reps as I pick up cookies and they enter my mouth. I feel very very large. Some of my pants are getting a little too snug. I'm ashamed to say it but I actually feel very unhealthy and a little out of control. I've had ENOUGH! This is NOT me.

The past few weeks, I've made a lot excuses including:

I'll start once we move (to our new house not at parents)
It's too dark when I get home from work
I can't get up early because I didn't get to bed early enough
My job takes a lot out of me
It's too cold
I don't have anyone to run with
I just want to relax
I'll do it tomorrow
I don't have anywhere to run
I just ate.. I'll wait 30 minutes then go
and a few others I'm sure I'm missing.

But, enough is enough. Seriously. This is NOT me. I have just got to stop with all the excuses and just get moving. I've got to dig deep and snap out of this phase. It's going to be hard but IT'S A MUST. This is a slippery slope I don't want to go down.

For every excuse above, I have an answer. I know how to do this. I just have to do it.

I've spent most of today reflecting on the year. We have had many changes. We have had many ups and downs. This happens every winter, I'm no doctor but I'll call it seasonal depression and laziness. During the winter I always get down on myself. I eat a lot and exercise little that causes some negativity that needs to be kicked to the curb. While opening my gifts which included some great additions to my running gear. I decided that today was the day. I don't need to wait until Jan. 1st to make a change. I can change right now.

I gave my Dad a Hal Higdon personal training schedule for the April 30th Derby City Mini Marathon. In getting it all together I came across a few articles, training schedules and races but you'll have to stay tuned to see everything. Change doesn't happen over night so slowly but surely I WILL SNAP OUT OF THIS. However, Mom and I walked for 45 minutes through the snow yesterday..but there is much work to do.

I hope you stay tuned for my journey... and maybe a few others will join us. Merry Christmas. I am thankful and celebrating the birth of the one who provided hope that allows use to renew our strength..(Isaiah 40:31)
My day is Monday. That gives me a little extra time to start my day and some time for daylight running (since I work 9-6 the rest of the week). This morning it was a nice warm temperature and I headed out for a quick 1.5. I did it in 9:30 pace. I was just glad to be out there. I wish I could have run for longer but I had grocery shopping, etc to do and since it's been a few days since my last run..I'm not trying to push it.

I felt great and can't wait to get abck on track with exercise (including P90X) and running (training for the Derby Mini Marathon in April with my Dad!) Now that it's my 2nd week of work, I feel more confident about my new work-life balance.

Can we just give a quick shout out to Leah for her 'training'. Best GYRO post ever.. Get your run on for any reason you want..so long as your run :) Love it.
It was a little cool but loved being outdoors in the middle of November.

I can't take full credit for deciding to ride bikes that was Mom's choice. I told her she could pick any activity and that's what she chose. We biked 5 miles on a trail that was part gravel and part paved. Mom did great at keeping the pace up with Steve and I and our heart rates were up the whole time for about 40 or so minutes.

I skipped on the P90X last night because I was tired and wanted to make sure I wasn't too sore or tired for my first day of work..which is going excellent by the way :)
She's been an inspiration in so many ways. First of all, her faith and her love for the Lord. She's a big career women who always made sure I knew that I can be anything I wanted to be as long as I put my mind to it and rely on God's guidance. She's very good at her job but she typically has to travel 2 weeks out of the month. However, she will be in Ohio with me TRAVEL free (except to some holiday family gatherings but that doesn't count) for the next 9 WEEKS! If that doesn't scream, GYRO project, I don't know what would :)

My Mom is trying to lose some weight and just regain control of her health. She's tried running, dieting, a personal trainer, you name it, she's done it. But, she's never done the Sarah method ;) She's going to be hard because, hello: she's my Mom and doesn't like to be told what to do. But, I don't fall from the tree so this should be a fun battle for you to keep up with.

Today we headed out for our walk (so she thought) and warmed up. Stretched. Then the moment of truth it went something like this:
Sarah: Mom, let's try and try. Your pace and only as far as you can go.
Mom: Sarah, I've told you I don't want to be a runner but, ok.
Then she was off. We ran for 2 minutes, took a 2 minute walk break to catch her breath and ran for 2 more minutes. She did it. We walked back to the house, stretch and had some protein shakes. She fought me a little but, hey, I've heard it all before. I have 9 weeks to make a runner and establish a new healthy lifestyle. I'm excited for this new challenge and secretly, I think she is too. We took an after run picture but she made me promise not to post it, so we will post it as the before shot and in 9 weeks post the after.. and you can judge for yourselves if running makes a difference

Today, was day 2 of P90X training for me and it was cardio. It was pretty hard but I really liked the variety of exercises especially starting with yoga. I'm always amazed at how hard yoga is..I really get to breathing heavy. After that we headed out for our evening walk and then to some delicious Greek food.

All in all, a great day full of a few workouts.
Nothing specific against them, I just can't do the moves therefore, I don't like them. I can remember in high school going to a friends house and just watching 8 minute abs. I can remember the first time I saw P90X, just watching it on my couch. It's pitiful I know but I've always been a runner and if I'm not 'running' then I don't feel like I'm working out. I know that this is flawed thinking but it's how I honestly feel. (I feel the same about workout classes but that's for another post).

I would never buy workout videos because of my history but since I'm at my parents and they have it..I thought why not.

So, today was Day 1 of this new adventure. I'm doing the "Lean workout that has more cardio (remember I like running :) ) and less resistance for maximum weight loss".. sounds good enough to me! I didn't do everything to the maximum reps because I kept having to pull myself up from the mat and actually do the moves not just watch them like a tv show :) It's pretty intense using muscles I forgot I had but I'm glad I stuck through it even though it wasn't pretty at times.

I plan on running some during these 90 days but don't want to be so tired and sore for my first day at the new job on Monday so once I get through next week, I'll add that back in. (Unless, I can't take the gorgeous weather we are having and sneak a run in tomorrow)!

How about you, how do you feel about workout videos and fitness programs like P90X?
Since my last post a lot has changed.

My husband's job moved us to Columbus, OH (just so happens, my parents live here)! Once that happened there was A LOT to do (put the house on the market, sell the house, find a job, say goodbye to our dear friends, find a new house, etc). We are about half way through that list. I accepted a job in Columbus and will be starting on Monday. I'm so thankful it happened so quickly in this job market! Our house has been on the market for about 45 days, still waiting on a buyer but hopeful for a lead we got yesterday. We have started the process of looking for a new home but enjoying the comforts of living with Mom and Dad (rent free & cable) for the first time since I was 18. A little getting used to but it's kind of fun.

I've run some since this whole process got moving, mostly with GYRO VA. My Mom and I have walked some. I've done some P90X. With this time change and my new job unless I run before I go to work, it seems I'm going to have to find some other options, maybe running with a headlight?! We are also looking at joining a gym, which I haven't actively gone to since college. I'm excited about all the changes but I'm ready to get into a routine especially with exercise and running. I made a commitment to myself to do P90X starting tomorrow, and I'll have to blog about. That way you can hold me accountable, like you did with the marathon, and you'll have something to read :) I'm sure I'll get some runs in too since Dad (the reason GYRO began) has talked about running the Louisville Mini Marathon in April!

So, here is to a new chapter of GYRO and my new commitment to this blog!
I haven't been planning my running but it just seems to be flowing lately. I got the GYRO text this afternoon and was excited to get out of work on time to get in a few miles--5 to be exact with excellent conversation (even though I talked most of the time ;) ). I felt good. My knee is still a little sore but I did so backwards running that seemed to stretch it out. It sure makes me a little dizzy to be running backwards and talking haha.

It has been quite sometime since I did 21 miles in 4 days :) but I like it! The best part. Steve is back in VA and I'm planning on some outdoor activities for the weekend!
It's been really hard on them. This friend is a super active person, so doing nothing was really hard. They didn't have an energy to exercise but we both knew that running is what they really needed to get them back on their feet. Getting out there is 90% of the battle. I strongly encouraged them to just give it a try even though I knew, it'd be really hard for them because they aren't at the level they were when they had to stop.. it takes time.

There was a time in my life that I couldn't believe me, Sarah, a runner, could not run a mile. It was really depressing. I had taken a hiatus from running and it was hard to believe that someone who had run most of their life was struggling to run a mile. I pushed on. The next day I tried a mile again and slowly added to that. Running takes time to build a base, if you stop for any amount of time, you'll have to take some time to build back up. While training for the marathon, I knew my base would be stronger than ever once finished but I'd have to continue running even if it was only for a couple of miles or a few times a week. Every now and again, people have to take baby steps to reach their goal.

So, here is to my friend..baby steps, doesn't make you a baby it makes you stronger!

Last Monday (the 11th) I met my friend Hannah at the high school track for a good ole' fashion pole workout (called poles but really just 100's) We did it like this 200,300,400,500,600,500,400,300,200 with a 100 meter walk in between. It was a great workout..I felt it in my abs and I felt so good after the workout. I'm looking forward to adding more track workouts into my routine.. see a little known fact..I was a track star in high school. A sprinter at that. We were #2 in the state for the 4x100 and I was leadoff! It was fun..but distance hasn't always been my thing.

On Sunday, Nicki and her husband Mathis would be running 10 miles for their long run of the week (they are training for the Disney Marathon in January). We are relocating to Columbus, Ohio in the next few weeks and our house had an open house on Sunday so I asked if I could join for 3 or 4 miles.. I should have known better. I ran the whole 10 with her. Mathis went ahead and besides being thirsty I felt great until mile 8. I hit a huge wall. I couldn't wait to finish and my legs and knees were beginning to hurt. I still can't believe I can just up and run 10 miles (Thank you marathon training). I was soo sore and tired on Sunday night but so glad I did it!

On Monday, the GYRO group ran (Hannah, Nicki, Jess. St. and myself). We ran 4 miles. WHAT WAS I THINKING?! It was a beautiful night and I just really enjoyed talking and stretching my legs out. However, today my knee is REALLY sore and I'm thinking I need some new shoes. I normally keep pretty good track of the mileage on them but I did get them in March so I'm thinking a new pair is overdue.

I love running and I can't wait to walk it all off tonight :)
It's been over a year since the marathon.. it's pretty depressing but at the same time ok. I swore I wouldn't let myself go but when you don't make running a priority it quickly gets away from you. Now, I've run and I'd say I'm in shape (I could run 10 miles today if need be) BUT, I'm not in training shape. I eat crap. Lots of crap and that has to stop because I'm not burning the same amount of calories. I also don't stay hydrated. There was a time in my life that soda was NEVER an option and I need to go back to that. I also NEVER ate fast food. Definitely need to go back to that rule!

But, today was a new beginning. Today was a start. I've drank plenty of water and walked 40 minutes through the hills of Blacksburg with Jessica. Tomorrow is a chance to do even better. Running is great and I've always been a fan but sometimes you just have to move weather that comes in runs, walks jumpping jacks, whatever...just get up and go!
I had spent the 4 months prior to last October training for my very first marathon. I was tired last October but I was so excited and prepared for the marathon. The whole training process seems like a blur now because so much has changed but I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. Because of some circumstances, I won't be running this years marathon and I am far from the best shape of my life. But, that's ok because life happens and I always go through spells with running. I've always been a runner but some seasons in my life allow me to be a serious runner while others allow me to just run. Both are ok with me. My marathon last year inspired my best friend, Kim to run her first marathon. Kim is beyond an AWESOME friend and has really embraced this new running life. She's a little burnt out but hey, we all get there when training so much..your life stops for running..it's hard. So give her a little encouragement on her blog. Kim will be running the Baltimore Marathon on October 16th and I KNOW she is going to rock it. Kim has also decided to tweet for GYROde. We are looking for new twitter accounts to highlight the GYRO clubs everywhere, shoot me an e-mail sbhamm02 (at) gmail (dot) com and let me know if you'd like to be the "tweeter" for GYRO in your area :)
Wal-marts, Internets, Krogers, etc. It's just funny.

Anyway, last night met Hannah at the Huckleberry for a nice evening run. We went at 7pm which is just a little too late because the Huckleberry gets so dark with all the tree coverings. I'd say we ran right around 2 miles. It was a great run with regards to the cooler temps but my knees, legs, everything is just pretty sore from being so lazy the past few weeks. However, I have been doing early morning core workouts that I plan to continue. I've also been eating pretty healthy. I'm even giving fish a try this weekend..eeek!

During our run we talked about GYRO. Hannah felt a little bad that someone had asked her if she was taken GYRO over. I told her don't feel bad. This is what GYRO is all about. The purpose of GYRO is to help you find runners who are near you, same pace, schedule, etc and start your own breakout group but all with the common theme and network of GYRO. There is a local neighborhood group starting up, a Virginia Tech campus group, mommy's group, a northern VA group, a DE group, etc We are currently working on plans to be able to link to all the groups but for now you can follow GYROhq (headquarters) at http://twitter.com/GYROhq for all the dish.
Until next time.

Yesterday was a pretty good Monday. Work was a bit crazy (but that is nothing new). Steve got home relatively early. We had dinner prepared thanks to my dinner co-op (I can share in a later post). Instead of our usual vegging out on the couch we decided to give our cars some much needed TLC. While were were washing them I could get over of how PERFECT the weather and how I was not running! So, I just happen to drop the hint to Steve that we should go for a run. I was completely taken back when he agreed..remember this? but let's be honest I said what if we went to the trail for a walk/run.. all he heard was the walk part ;) We headed home and changed into some running gear and hit the trail. I tried to keep the pace pretty fast because the last time we ran he became injured because he was going to slow. A few times I looked back (yep, back) and he had a big grin on his face because he knew I was purposely trying to push him. He said he felt good and we turned around at the mile mark and walked back. We stretched a lot and no knee pain but it finally came out. He has no desire to be a runner.. but hey, I've heard that before.

Here's to my new GYRO project, Steve. The whole run I was thinking "take a picture for the blog" but I forgot.. :( Maybe next time..because with me..there is always a next time :)

During my marathon training I was introduced by my friend, Shannon, to the Garmin 405 forerunner GPS watch. I've never been big on running gadgets (remember I run because I like to be stress free and think.. less is more) but, after a few runs with this watch, I was hooked! It's nice to know your distance and pace when in an unfamiliar place and you don't have to map out routes, just out the door and go! Like Shannon, I've shared my watch with a few running buddies who've quickly become hooked. Wendy got one for her birthday and shared this GREAT deal with me.. It's definitively worth looking into. Pricey yes, but SOOO worth it :)

I especially like the 405 because it's not that bulky and has a nice online component.
For some reason I can't keep up with this blog to safe my life (maybe because my world is spinning right now...without any chances of slowing down). Anyway, I haven't run in what seems like weeks..I've really missed it. I'm trying to get a hold of my spinning world and getting back on track with the running, eating and budgeting because all we've been doing is traveling and eating!

Steve and I spent the long weekend at his parent's beach place in Rehoboth Beach. Something about that beach brings me back to high school..maybe because I spent a lot of time there in high school or I always run into high school friends..anyway, I just love it. We are such beach people--can sit there looking and listening to the waves with no where to be and nothing to do for hours! We unexpectedly ran into some old friends..one who we ran with in high school and lives in Hawaii now and another friend and his fiance who grew up across the street from Steve. We talked a lot about running and life and it was just good to catch up. Then it hit me, the last time I saw these guys, I had just run 20 miles and I had done it at the beach. Wow, has it really been a year..and was I really just sitting on the beach with no intentions of running.. my how a year changes things.

After the beach we met up with my college friend who lives in DC and headed to the Boise St-Tech game..what a great game and terrible outcome. In track practice we were always told to run through the finish..just because you see the end doesn't mean you give up because you never know who is right behind you and ready to take the win away from you. So it's not over until it's over..always run hard through the finishes :) After the game, we spent the night at her place on The Hill. She lives in such a cool part of the city. We spent the whole next day touring the city and went to the Spy Museum which was REALLY fun. We ate some more and walked some more and finally headed back home around 4pm. Sometimes, walking is more painful than running. But, I love the city atmosphere of people running everywhere! It was really motivating for me to get back into it.
Here are some recent wins from GYRO members:

Wendy completed her first half marathon
Nicki started training for her first full marathon
Kim only has 2 more long runs before her full marathon
Was my last post really July 31st? That is terrible. I apologize to my faithful blog readers (who've probably stopped reading because I stopped posting!)

Too much to catch you up on but let's just say--Life is CRAZY right now. The weather has still been hot. Running has been a strong #3 (Family and Friends) take priority these days. Won't be running the Baltimore Marathon (more on that in a later post). Been part of some monumental runs with Wendy (whose running her first 1/2 THIS weekend!) Including her first 10 miles.. Was I part of your first 10 miles? If so, leave a comment I'd love to relive it! GYRO has also been reached out to by some new runners thanks to a shoutout on our church's new website and some other friends who will help make GYRO an even better group and site (if I can ever find some time to stay on it!)

I really want to put some energy and time into GYRO because I've learned over the past 5 years people can really relate to GYRO. Do you have ideas that can make GYRO better? I'd love to hear them.. If you read the blog, your part of our story and I'm a firm believer in active participation :)
The very first ever GYRO race. I woke up very excited but with a nervous stomach like on every race day..whether a big race or small. Got my favorite shorts and shirt on and headed downstairs to see that it was raining. I stepped outside to a nice cool morning and the rain drops were kind of refreshing. I was a little bummed when I checked the radar to see that is was coming our rain. We really need the rain here in VA but I can't tell you the last time it rained on a Saturday... but the race must still go one. We gathered our gear and headed out the door. As we were waiting for everyone to arrive it was nice to hear everyone excited about the race and not worrying about the rain.

We had a great turnout..especially for our first one! 11 people! 5 people did the 10k (myself, Nicki, Wendy, Mathis and Evan) and the other 6 did the 5k (my brother Matt, neighbor Daron, co-worker Monqiue, friends Stacie, Lisa and Jed).
Everyone did so well..we had some new faces to GYRO who are really trying to like running and a wet cool morning doesn't make you love running so they'll have to come back again ;) We had some occasional runners..you know the kind that run really fast whenever, with no training..yeah those guys. But, I was really proud of Wendy. She's been grinding it out for the last few months training for her first half marathon. And by grinding it out, I mean running at least 3 days a week and letting me talk her into crazy runs :) She ran a great time today and looked great--I was so proud because I know she'll always be a ball player (basketball) first but she sure is coming around to running.
Some other shoutouts--I roped some friends into volunteering to be at the turn arounds and finish line. They are real true friends because it was raining so they were wet and probably cold.. did I mention how nice the temperture was?! Anyway, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to my hubby Steve, college roommate Erin and her hubby Greg and friend Jackie. We couldn't have done it without you :)
Ok enough about the race, afterwards we headed back to myplace for a potluck breakfast that was AWESOME! We pretty much ate everything then just relaxed the rest of the morning/ afternoon.

Today I could really feel the psychological affects of not running.. I was getting a little testy and my legs were itching to get out there. I had to wait until 5pm for the heat to die down but I was so glad when Wendy picked me up.

I was a little nervous running in the heat but i hydrated throughout the day and knew the shade on the Huckleberry would give some comfort.

We ran 7 miles. A milestone for Wendy.. she's training for a 1/2 in September and has only really be training for 3 months (not to mention she had a baby 11 months ago!) It was hot but I felt great..and I think she did too..although tomorrow might be a sore day for us both.

I'm headed to bed before I eat the house out...Until next time..
