Yesterday, I received an e-mail from a friend and the title was 62 mailboxes. I knew right away that she'd been bitten by the running bug (it tends to bite others more around this time of year with the gorgeous weather and the fact that swimsuit season is right around the corner but I regress).
After reading her e-mail which talked about a lot of the things my readers can relate to:
"wasn't much of a runner"
"really doesn't like to run"
"didn't go that far"
"doesn't know what got into her"
but someway and somehow needed to run that night. What was so cool about this e-mail isn't that she ran or e-mailed me but that she referenced another GYRO friend's experience, this is what the blog is intended to do: connect runners at any level together so we can learn from each other, be motivated and inspired to reach our goals, whatever they might be.
Your running experience matters to me and you never know who you might inspire: GYRO.
So this post is to my Mailbox Runners: Keeping counting those mailboxes and try to add 1 or a few each day!
On April 24th, I'll be participating in the Pickerington Mailbox run. It'll be my first Mailbox race but I'm looking forward to the company I'll have along the way :)

Honesty
...On March 20th I was really motivated to blog for 30 days and really grow the GYRO blog and running club through followers and our running community in Virginia and Delaware. 18 days in I failed, then this beautiful weekend happened and I failed some more. While pondering how I could spin this to a positive light, I quickly remembered..this is a running blog and you aren't running..which means I have little to write about. Another reason why I've fallen short of my goal is because I didn't plan very well. This blog allows you to post blogs at anytime of the day. I could have easily planned some topics and had wrote the blogs ahead of time instead of rushing around each day looking for a topic. This is so true of running a race or running any distance. If you don't prepare for the run, you'll feel fine when you start but as the miles pile up you'll quickly feel you have taken on more than you or your body can handle. Unfortunately, I've failed my blog goals but I'm not giving up because I have followers who want to be part of a running community and I don't want to let you down. Starting on Saturday, I'll begin training for the Baltimore Marathon, again. This time around, I'll be running with my best friend, Kim (you know the one who ran the last 4 miles with me last year). I've run with Kim for years and honestly, I've always been a little quicker but Kim has been doing some serious cross training and running and she can move it now so I have some work to do to keep up with her!
Here are some upcoming races GYRO members will be running in the next couple of months. If you'd like more information on who is running what race, shoot me an e-mail or comment and I'll be glad to put you in touch :)
April 16th Blacksburg, VA: Virginia Tech's 3.2 mile race for remembrance
April 24th Roanoke, VA: Blue Ridge Parkway half marathon (13.1)
May 2nd Philadelphia, PA: Broad Street Run (10 miler)
May 8th Floyd, VA: Run for your Young Life (5K)
May 16th Wilmington, DE: Christina Care half marathon (13.1)
May 29th Wilmington, DE: 5K Run for Kay's Kamp
I'd love to hear how these races go and feature you on the blog, so keep me posted!
I'll be posting some summer races that look fun for both our Delaware and Virginia clubs in the next few days.In the meantime, if you are looking for races in Delaware check out this website: here and if you are in Virginia check out this website: here or here
I'll try the 30 day challenge once I start training for the marathon again :)

Fail
I've failed. I forgot to blog yesterday! UGH! I'm so disappointed--I woke up this morning in a panic that I forgot to blog..I was really busy with work and church last night that it just slipped my mind, oh well! I guess I'll have 2 post today.
So, today I am going to compile a list of races that GYRO friends are running in the coming months. Please leave a comment of the races you are signed up for or are training for. There just might be a giveaway!

Inspired by GYRO
Hello! My name is Kim and I am honored to be a guest blogger from Delaware tonight! I have had the pleasure to run with Sarah since we were juniors at Newark High School! Since I can remember, Sarah has always been a motivating force when it comes to running! We were both captains on the cross country team our senior year of high school and had so much fun! I was always a slower runner, but over the years I have really developed a love it. My outlook is back of the pack is where it's at and I'm looking for distance not speed!!
I am one of the original members of GYRO - our first summer of being in existence was so much fun. Everyone had a great time running the trails of White Clay Creek State Park and I think at this point I knew I would be a life-long runner. So let's fast forward to October 2009. Sarah and I had always talked about running a marathon - I talked, Sarah did it! I was there for her first marathon and what an inspiration it was! Watching her cross that finish line really inspired me to train. Whenever I thought of marathons these words came to mind - torture, pain, sick... you get the point. But being at an actual race completely changed my mind. There were tons of people participating and even more standing on the streets cheering. I knew I wanted to be a part of something like this.
So here I am today. I am training for a marathon and also keeping a blog of my training experiences. My blog will make me accountable for training. I'm telling the world I'm training for a marathon so I have to do it now. There is no backing out.
Here is my upcoming race schedule:
May 2 - Broad Street Run in Philadelphia, PA (10 miles)
May 16 - Christiana Care Marathon in Wilmington, DE (I'm doing the half - 13.1 miles)
October 16 - Baltimore Marathon
Over the Easter weekend Sarah and Steve were in Delaware visiting Steve's family so Sarah and I were able to run together at our favorite spot, the Nature Center in White Clay Creek State Park. We planned for 8 miles.
We got there around 7:15 a.m. and the parking lot was FREAKING PACKED. Apparently Saturday was the start of trout fishing season and everyone and their dad was there fishing along the creek. After some quick stretching we were on our way.
So we've decided that many fishermen have never seen females before. We ran along the trail and all we heard was "good morning, ladies" blah blah blah. I waved, but, Sarah, on the other hand was not pleased. On our way back she definitely called them out - typical Sarah. haha
At about the three mile mark we headed up two large hills. I felt strong going up and I credit that to all of the cycling and RPM classes I've been doing.
I've decided I really like early-morning runs. It was so peaceful with the birds chirping and the water flowing down the creek. We love White Clay Creek.

So overall we had a really good run. We finished in 1:34 - we stopped a few times to stretch and the two hills did slow us down a bit.
To the right is our mileage and how long it took us. I really want to get Sarah's new Garmin GPS watch!! My birthday is coming up :o)
That's all for tonight! Thanks for letting me blog, Sarah! Get Your Run On!
Peace. Love. Run

Friday Guest Blogger
Wow,
The honor of being asked to be a guest blogger. For years family members in my immediate family have been running. As a child, I was a fast runner and could beat all the boys, but I never experienced running as a teen or adult. I had ran a little bit once with my family in the Smokey Mountains on vacation but had become discouraged with aches, pains, and sweating. But, that now has changed! I've been running now for a little over a week. My philosophy is not to count miles, but to count mailboxes. I have found that is something that motivates me and keeps me going. I set a goal of trying to run around the block which is roughly 26 mailboxes. My husband has of course converted it to 1/2 mile. Whatever, I count mailboxes. As a 51 year old, running around the block is a good way to let off steam and experience the beauty of my neighbors yards while raising my heart rate. Today, was a real test with the heat rising outside to 79. But, I made it. I have now ran around the block 3 times in the last 3 days without any walking. I guess I'm going to have to expand my run to another street soon and see how many more mailboxes I can count.

GYRO friends
Lately, I've been hearing about all kinds of unsuspecting runners. You know, those friends who always thought I was crazy for running the distances I run or joked 'the only place I'm running is to the fridge'. Do you have any of those?
Well some are becoming runners and I couldn't be more excited. That is the GYRO mission to inspire other to fall in love with running or fall back in love with running.
Last night I got a text from a college friend, Chad that said.. "Guess who jumped on the running bandwagon" It made me laugh because Chad and I worked together on campus and spent lots of time talking/hanging out and I felt a little honored he wanted to share this new hobby with me.
I also got an update from my Mom and Dad who have started their own little GYRO club in Ohio. Now, my Dad was an original GYRO member and part of the foundation of the club but had gotten away from the sport in recent years. Mom, she's never been much of a runner but to hear her ask for a playlist..just makes me smile. I hope that we can run a race as a family sometime this fall!
A co-worker who just couldn't believe running was something you trained to do. He just thought he could sprint a mile. He's learning that sprinting around the bases is quite different than running a mile. You have to build your mileage slowly. Its been funny to hear him talk about his run at the gym the night before because he has quickly figured out..it's not as easy as it look.
Do you know of other's who would like to be part of the GYRO community? Invite them to run and become a follower of this blog!
