Running 3

Last night, I met Wendy and Jessamyn at the trail for 3 miles. It was hot, again (side note: seems like all I talk about is how hot it is..) Anyway, it was a nice run and I really like getting to know more about Jessamyn and Wendy while running. We ran 3 miles in 33 minutes which felt fine to me. Wendy is a trooper pushing through the runs on little sleep. Shes had some frustrations from getting into running, then getting sick, then getting back into it, then being on vacation then getting back into it,etc (anyone else know the drill) but I KNOW her hard work and her "base" is there so it should be no time before shes back to 100% and seeing the increase in mileage.

Last night we also talked about the 'running priority'. Last summer, running came first..before anything..my husband..dinner..work..friends..family..etc. I had a goal and nothing was going to stop me. This summer, I'm not going to do that. I can't do that.. I can't be that selfish again. I KNOW I can run 26.2 miles now. I love to run because it makes me happy and reduces stress (and not to mention helps with my waistline). I want to enjoy the runs and spend time with GYRO to be the encourager and motivator. Sure, I need to be building up my own miles but the beauty of never really stopping running from last year..is I'm already there :) After talking to Wendy and Jessamyn, I'm going to move my long runs to Friday mornings or Saturday mornings, that way I have time to rest. I'm not so worried about the weekday runs because well, those are for fun with GYRO. I'm glad I thought about this last night so I can spend energy in the right places. So here is to a new focus, recharged and ready to run Sarah.

Marathon #2 Training day #1

June 8th, 2009 was the first official day I blogged about marathon training and you can read about it here.

Yesterday, June 14th, 2010 was the first official day I trained for the 2nd marathon I plan on doing in October. It was a MUCH different experience for a few reasons. First of all, I've been running. None of this getting into running shape, I've worked hard to maintain all the training I did last year. Second of all I have GYRO..I'm a social runner when others are with me the possibilities are endless, by myself.. can't even run a mile (ok, maybe an exaggeration but you get the point.) Finally, I'm a lot more confident. I know that I can run a marathon now we are just going to work on the time. Last time, I had no expectations except to finish. This time around it's about having fun and improving my time.

I met the GYRO VA crew (Jessamyn, Jess, Hannah and her friend, Erin) after work on the Huckleberry. Side Note: I spent the day at work writing my marathon training program and reading a TON of articles on running diets, strength training, the latest and greatest technology, etc but I'm not really into any of that. For me, it's about stress reduction and so I can eat more :) Anyway, I haven't completed my running plan (I do believe in goals and plans) because I think I need to be flexible because of my job, social calendar, upcoming travel, etc. It's a work in progress.

Last night, we ran together to the 1.5 mile marker. Jessamyn and Jess turned around and went 3. Hannah, Erin and myself continued. We ran 5 miles in about 46 minutes (or maybe 48 minutes..can't remember and the Garmin is at home). I was really hot and sweaty but it felt great to push it a bit and stretch my legs out. Everything felt great and I think I drank enough water because I didn't really get that I'm so dehydrated feeling.

Here is a picture of Erin, Hannah and myself after our run! I'm wearing my Baltimore Marathon shirt in honor of Day 1 of Training for #2.

It was only fitting that Marcee (my friend who ran the marathon with me in October) was at my house when I got home from GYRO. She's moving to Florida on Thursday to start her internship/residency (she's a Doctor, whose hot and single..just saying). I'm so sad she's moving but I'll always cherish our runs together and we'll always remember that we ran the marathon together.

One door is closing, but lots of others are opening. Here is to the new chapter of running!

Marathon Training Take 2

Well it has been just 6 months since I ran the Baltimore Marathon, but I've got the itch to do it all over again!I've run quite a few times since the marathon and it's all been positive. With the beautiful weather and great running friends, how could I not want to do it again.

Saturday, I met my friend Nicki at the Huckleberry and we had planned to run 10 miles. I can remember the first 10 miles I ran last year and how I was shocked I could do that. Saturday I was more shocked that we ran 10 miles in 1 hour and 42 minutes and I had not run in about 2 weeks! Last Summer I started training on June 8th and didn't run 10 miles until July 15th. My brother in law, Jeff, did mention since my base is built up and I've kept up with running enough it'll be a lot easier and quicker to reach those longer distances. I'm so thankful for that.

I'm thinking I'll probably just run twice a week for a while unless I have time to run 3 times a week but honestly, the time commitment it really hard right now and I am starting training almost 3 months ahead of last summer!

On another note, Congrats to my 2 best friends Kim and Julie. They ran the 8 mile loop at White Clay Creek in DE this weekend. It was Julie's first time running 8 miles and it was fun to talk to them on speaker phone after they got finished.. Can't wait to run with them this summer and talk Julie into the marathon ;)
